Do you ever feel out of sync with the world around you? Like there’s a disconnect between your values and theirs? This verse explains why.
John immediately connects our new identity as children of God to the world’s reaction – or lack thereof. "The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him."
A Shared Rejection
If we are truly children of God, and God’s love has transformed us, we are now set apart. The world, which is defined by its opposition to God and its ignorance of Him, cannot recognize or understand us. Our new spiritual reality doesn't compute with their natural, unspiritual perspective.
Knowing the Father, Knowing Us
The world didn't know Jesus when He was on earth, and because we belong to Him, they often don't know us either. This isn't necessarily a sign of failure, but a consequence of our union with Christ. Their lack of recognition of us stems from their fundamental lack of recognition of the Father. Our distinctiveness is a mark of our divine connection.
