John uses the word 'world' multiple times, but what does he really mean here? It's more than just the planet we live on.
More Than Just Geography
When John talks about 'the world,' he's not talking about creation itself – God loves the creation! He's referring to the system that is opposed to God. Think of it as:
- A value system: It's the way of thinking, living, and prioritizing that rejects God's truth and His ways.
- A spiritual power: It's influenced by forces that are anti-God, often summarized as 'the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the pride of life' (which we'll see in a moment).
- A temporary dominion: It's the realm that is currently under the sway of sin and opposition to God, destined to pass away.
This 'world' offers an alluring counterfeit to God's kingdom, tempting us with things that promise fulfillment but ultimately leave us empty.
