Divisions and arguments seem so common, even in the church. Paul points to this as a sign of spiritual immaturity. Why is unity so crucial?
Paul's direct address in this verse is a response to the factionalism tearing the Corinthian church apart (as seen in verses 4-5). He couldn't speak to them as mature believers because their behavior—forming cliques around different leaders—was immature and fleshly.
A Sign of Immaturity
Our ability to get along, to build each other up, and to stay united in Christ is a key indicator of spiritual health. When we allow personal preferences or loyalties to create deep divisions, it reveals that we are not yet walking fully in the Spirit. It's a sign that our old, fleshly ways of thinking are still too dominant.
The Goal: Unity in Christ
The early church faced similar struggles, but the ultimate goal, as taught throughout Scripture, is unity. True spirituality means prioritizing the Body of Christ over personal pride or preferences.
