Hebrews 5:12-14
This page isn't yet indexed by search engines.
The author isn't just pointing out their immaturity; he's emphasizing that their continued need for basic teachings, after this much time, indicates a spiritual regression, a step backward from where they ought to be. This isn't just about not progressing; it's about needing to relearn what they once knew, suggesting a potential slide away from their faith.
For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The author has been discussing the high priesthood of Jesus, specifically his role as an eternal priest after the order of Melchizedek, a topic he considers profound and difficult to fully explain. However, he pauses because his readers have become spiritually sluggish and are unable to grasp these deeper truths, needing to be reminded of the most basic principles of God's Word.
Imagine spending years learning to drive, but still needing someone to hold your hand and tell you when to signal. The writer of Hebrews felt that strongly about his readers.
The author of Hebrews is calling out the readers for their prolonged spiritual immaturity. He states, 'For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God.' The phrase 'by this time' emphasizes that a significant amount of time has passed since they first believed. They should have progressed beyond the foundational lessons and be ready to instruct others. Instead, they are like spiritual infants, unable to handle deeper truths.
We all start with milk, but staying there forever means something's not quite right. What's the difference between spiritual 'milk' and 'solid food'?
The verse contrasts 'milk' with 'solid food' to illustrate the readers' spiritual condition. 'Milk' represents the elementary doctrines – the absolute basics of God's Word. These are essential for new believers to survive and grow. 'Solid food,' on the other hand, refers to more advanced, complex teachings that require spiritual maturity and practiced discernment to understand and apply. The readers have regressed to the point where they can only handle milk, signifying their inability to grasp the deeper truths the writer wants to share (like the priesthood of Melchizedek, mentioned in the following verses).
