It grounds the resurrection in God's unfolding story, not just a sudden, surprising event.
that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul is meticulously laying out the foundational facts of the gospel message, the very core beliefs that Christians hold. He's just spoken of Jesus' death and burial, and he's about to move into the resurrection, emphasizing that these events weren't random but were prophesied and fulfilled according to God's plan outlined in the Old Testament. This section is crucial for establishing the historical reality and divine authority of Jesus' sacrifice and victory over death.
The cross is only half the story. What does Jesus' burial reveal about his mission and our salvation?
Paul doesn't just mention Jesus' death; he emphasizes his burial. This isn't just a detail; it’s crucial.
A Sign of True Death
Burial confirms Jesus was really dead. There was no trick, no swooning. His body was placed in a tomb, sealed and guarded. This act grounds the resurrection in historical reality. If he didn't truly die, the resurrection loses its meaning.
Solidarity with Humanity
Through his burial, Jesus experienced the ultimate separation that death brings – the separation of body and spirit. He entered into the full reality of human mortality, even the stillness of the grave, so that He could conquer it for us.
Jesus didn't just rise randomly; His resurrection was a planned, prophetic event. What does this tell us about God's faithfulness?
The phrase 'in accordance with the Scriptures' is powerful. It means Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection weren't unexpected events but the fulfillment of God's ancient promises.
Prophecy Fulfilled
From the Old Testament, there were hints and prophecies pointing to a Messiah who would suffer and rise again. Think of the 'suffering servant' passages or prophetic declarations about God not abandoning His anointed to the realm of death.

God's Master Plan
