What's striking here is that while the rest of Israel is simply recorded, Judah's entry in the "Book of the Kings" is framed by their exile and breach of faith. English Standard Version (ESV)
The Chronicler is summing up the entire history of Israel, moving from the establishment of the kingdom to its exile. This verse acts as a pivot, reminding readers that the detailed genealogies and king lists that follow are part of a larger historical record. It sets the stage for understanding the post-exilic return and rebuilding by highlighting the reason for their scattering: their unfaithfulness.
Imagine a massive project, spanning generations, with the goal of remembering everyone. That's what this verse hints at! It wasn't just about names, but about belonging.
Every Name Matters
This verse tells us that "all Israel was recorded in genealogies." This was no small task! Think about the sheer volume of information and the care taken to preserve it.
The second half of the verse delivers a stark contrast. What happens when a people turn away from God? The record of their lives leads to a record of their downfall.
Breach of Faith and its Cost
The phrase "because of their breach of faith" is incredibly significant. It's not just a political defeat, but a spiritual one.
