Jeremiah 24:5-7

What does Jeremiah 24:5-7 mean?

The verse emphasizes that God sent the exiles to Babylon, not just that they were taken. This reveals His sovereign hand at work, using even harsh circumstances for a redemptive purpose—their spiritual good and eventual restoration.

“Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Like these good figs, so I will regard as good the exiles from Judah, whom I have sent away from this place to the land of the Chaldeans. I will set my eyes on them for good, and I will bring them back to this land. I will build them up, and not tear them down; I will plant them, and not pluck them up. I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the LORD, and they shall be my people and I will be their God, for they shall return to me with their whole heart.

What Jeremiah 24:5-7 means

Jeremiah is revealing God's judgment through a vision of two baskets of figs: one good, one bad. This verse explains that the "good figs," representing the exiles already taken captive to Babylon, are actually viewed favorably by God, unlike those remaining in Judah who are likened to rotten figs. God declares that He sent these captives away, not for their destruction, but for their ultimate good.

God's Purpose in Exile

It might seem counterintuitive, but exile wasn't just punishment. God had a plan for those He sent away.

The prophet Jeremiah sees two baskets of figs. One is full of good figs, representing the exiles taken to Babylon. The other basket holds bad figs, representing those left in Judah. God declares that He will 'regard as good' those exiles, even though they've been sent away. This wasn't a random act; the text emphasizes that God sent them. This exile, harsh as it was, served a divine purpose: to bring them to repentance, to cure them of idolatry, and to draw them closer to Him. It was a 'refiner's fire' that ultimately led to spiritual good, making them a more purely monotheistic people.

Acknowledged by God

What does it mean for God to 'acknowledge' someone, especially in a time of judgment?

The word 'acknowledge' here signifies more than just recognition; it means to regard with favor, to know intimately, and to show special care. God contrasts the exiles with those left behind, implying that the captives, despite their outward suffering, are the ones He favors. He sees their repentance and their growing understanding of Him amidst their trials. This divine 'acknowledgment' is a powerful reminder that our physical location or current circumstances don't define God's view of us. He looks at the heart and sees those who are turning back to Him.
