Lists of names can seem dry, but this short verse names the foundational families of a crucial Levitical line. Who were these men and why does their lineage matter?
This verse highlights the immediate descendants of Kohath, the second son of Levi. These four sons – Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel – became the patriarchs of significant clans within the Kohathites.
The Founders
- Amram: Notably, the father of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. His lineage would carry the priestly and prophetic mantle.
- Izhar: Father of Korah, who famously rebelled against Moses, but also of other important figures.
- Hebron: A significant family line within the Kohathites, with later descendants playing roles in David's reign.
- Uzziel: His descendants were appointed to various duties, including singers and musicians.
Their importance lies in being the heads of the households that carried forward the sacred responsibilities entrusted to the Kohathites, which included carrying the most sacred items of the tabernacle and later the temple.
