Why did one specific family within the Levites, the Kohathites, hold such a crucial and honored position?
The book of Numbers reveals a detailed organizational structure for the Levites, who were set apart to serve God and the Israelites. Within the Levites, there were three main divisions: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari, named after Levi's sons. Our verse today focuses on the Kohathites, listing their four primary families: Amramites, Izharites, Hebronites, and Uzzielites.
What set the Kohathites apart? They were entrusted with the most sacred items of the Tabernacle. This included the Ark of the Covenant, the altar of incense, the altar of burnt offering, the lampstand, and the other vessels of the sanctuary (Numbers 3:31). This was a heavy responsibility, as these were items directly associated with God's presence. The scholars note that this family had significant privileges, including their proximity to the Tabernacle and a larger share of cities in the promised land. This wasn't an accident of birth, but a divine appointment for a vital role.
