The oath "As I live" is God's solemn vow, underscoring the absolute certainty of His judgment, not just on Moab and Ammon, but also on those who mistreat His people. This isn't just about desolation; it's about the remnant of Israel, those survivors, becoming the ones who will ultimately plunder and possess the lands of their oppressors.
Therefore, as I live,” declares the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, “Moab shall become like Sodom, and the Ammonites like Gomorrah, a land possessed by nettles and salt pits, and a waste forever. The remnant of my people shall plunder them, and the survivors of my nation shall possess them.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
The prophet Zephaniah has just declared God's judgment on the Philistines, and now turns to pronounce a similar doom on the neighboring nations of Moab and Ammon. These nations, closely related to Israel, had a history of oppressing God's people, and Zephaniah declares they will suffer a fate as utter and complete as that of Sodom and Gomorrah, becoming desolate and uninhabitable wastelands. Ultimately, the prophet foresees that a remnant of God's own people will one day inherit and possess the lands of these defeated enemies.
