“I will stretch out my hand against Judah and against all the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and I will cut off from this place the remnant of Baal and the name of the idolatrous priests along with the priests, those who bow down on the roofs to the host of the heavens, those who bow down and swear to the LORD and yet swear by Milcom,
English Standard Version (ESV)
Here, the prophet Zephaniah is directly addressing Judah and Jerusalem, declaring that God’s judgment is coming upon them. This comes after a general announcement of the coming Day of the Lord, and it’s important because judgment often begins with God's own people. Zephaniah insists that this judgment will be thorough, purging out all remnants of Baal worship and its associated priests, even those who claim to serve God but have strayed into idolatry.
When God's 'hand' is mentioned in Scripture, it often signifies His power and active involvement. Here, it's not a hand of blessing, but of judgment.
Zephaniah declares God will 'stretch out my hand' against Judah and Jerusalem. This isn't a passive observation; it's God actively bringing judgment. This imagery is used throughout Scripture to show God's direct intervention, whether in salvation (like the Exodus) or in judgment. For Judah, who had received so much grace, this outstretched hand signifies a severe and comprehensive reckoning for their unfaithfulness. The judgment begins at 'the house of God,' highlighting the gravity of sin within His own people.
God's judgment isn't just about punishment; it's about purification. Here, the target is the 'remnant of Baal' and its associated leadership.
The verse specifies cutting off 'the remnant of Baal' and 'the name of the Chemarims with the priests.' This signifies a total eradication. 'Remnant' implies even the last traces of Baal worship are to be removed. The 'Chemarims' were a specific class of idolatrous priests, often associated with black garments, and 'the priests' likely refers to both these false priests and the unfaithful priests of the Lord. God demands complete loyalty, and any worship offered to Him that is mixed with idolatry, or any worship of false gods, will be purged out. This includes not just the practices, but the very 'name' and memory of these corrupt religious figures, showing the thoroughness of God's decree.

Why would God's judgment fall so fiercely on His own people, Judah and Jerusalem? It's a principle that echoes throughout Scripture.
The prophet pronounces judgment not on some distant foreign nation, but directly on 'Judah' and 'all the inhabitants of Jerusalem.' This is a crucial aspect of God's justice: judgment begins with His own covenant people. They had been given a unique relationship with God, His law, and His promises, yet they had fallen into deep idolatry, even defiling the very temple with false worship. Because they had experienced greater grace and revelation, their apostasy carried a heavier consequence. This principle serves as a solemn warning that proximity to God does not grant immunity from His judgment when there is unrepented sin.
