The verse promises not just a few individuals but "peoples" and the "inhabitants of many cities" seeking the Lord. This isn't just about a handful of converts; it highlights a widespread, organized movement where entire communities, from various urban centers, will turn to worship.
“Thus says the LORD of hosts: Peoples shall yet come, even the inhabitants of many cities. The inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, ‘Let us go at once to entreat the favor of the LORD and to seek the LORD of hosts; I myself am going.’ Many peoples and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem and to entreat the favor of the LORD.
English Standard Version (ESV)
In these verses, God is reassuring His people who are rebuilding the temple after their return from exile, assuring them that their future will be far more glorious than their present struggles suggest. Following promises of peace and security for Jerusalem, the prophet now expands the vision to show how this rebuilt city will become a spiritual magnet, drawing people from all over the world to worship the Lord. This sets the stage for even greater future blessings, culminating in global recognition of God's presence.
The people of Israel were struggling. The temple was rebuilt, but it was humble, and surrounding enemies loomed. How could God's promises ever come true?
The phrase "Thus says the LORD of hosts" isn't just a formal introduction; it's a powerful reminder. It means the One who commands all armies, the One with unlimited power and resources, is speaking. When Zechariah spoke these words, the reality for the people was discouraging. Their nation was small, their temple modest. But God's perspective is cosmic! He's not limited by human circumstances or sight. He's assuring them that His plans are far bigger than they can imagine, and He will bring them to pass. It's a divine recalibration for their weary hearts.
God promised His people would be blessed, but this verse speaks of others being drawn to them. What makes God's people so attractive?
This passage paints a picture of a future where the blessing of God on His people is so evident and powerful that it becomes a magnet. "Peoples shall yet come, even the inhabitants of many cities." This isn't just about Jews returning; it speaks to a global phenomenon. The prosperity, peace, and divine favor experienced by those who follow the LORD will be so compelling that people from all over, from countless communities, will be drawn to seek Him. This foreshadows the spread of the Gospel, where the transformative power of God in believers' lives attracts others to Him.
