It's easy to see the "filthy garments" as just a symbol of sin, but the original Hebrew word used here can also imply "suits of apparel," suggesting a whole wardrobe of sin. The promise of "change of raiment" then isn't just about getting rid of sin, but about receiving a completely new, pure wardrobe—a full restoration to righteousness and honor.
And the angel said to those who were standing before him, “Remove the filthy garments from him.” And to him he said, “Behold, I have taken your iniquity away from you, and I will clothe you with pure vestments.” And I said, “Let them put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the LORD was standing by.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This vision follows Satan's accusation against Joshua, the high priest, who represents the people of Israel returning from exile. The Angel of the Lord intervenes, rebuking Satan and commanding attendant angels to remove Joshua's filthy garments, symbolizing his sin and impurity. This divine pronouncement and action directly precede the promise of his cleansing and re-clothing with pure vestments, signifying his restoration and acceptance.
Imagine standing before God, but instead of pure white, you're covered in rags. What do those 'filthy garments' really represent?
In this vision, the 'filthy garments' Joshua the high priest is wearing are a powerful symbol. They represent his sins and the sins of the people of Israel. In ancient cultures, clothing was deeply connected to identity and status. Dirty, tattered clothes spoke of shame, impurity, and being unfit for God's presence or service.
Think about it:
God doesn't just remove the old; He bestows something new, something glorious. What is this incredible 'exchange' He offers?
The pivotal moment in this vision is the divine exchange: the filthy garments are removed, and pure, festive robes are given. This isn't just a superficial cleaning; it's a complete transformation, signifying profound theological truths.

The Divine Action:
This exchange is the heart of the Gospel: Christ takes our sin (the filthy garments) and gives us His righteousness (the pure vestments), enabling us to stand before God clean and accepted.
Being forgiven is incredible, but what does it enable us to do? How does this vision speak to our purpose?
The removal of filthy garments and the bestowal of pure vestments aren't just about personal relief; they are fundamentally about restoring Joshua to his priestly calling and, symbolically, restoring God's people to His service.
