The measuring might seem to imply limits, but God's plan for Jerusalem is astonishingly different. What does it mean for a city to have God as its wall?
While the measuring line might initially suggest defining and confining Jerusalem, the message that follows reveals God's intention for incredible expansion. Jerusalem is destined to become so populated that it will overflow its walls, like 'towns without walls'.
God Himself as the Defense
But how can a city without walls be safe? The answer is profound: "For I myself will be her wall of fire round about... and I will be the glory in her midst" (Zechariah 2:5). God Himself becomes the ultimate protection.
This is a radical shift from traditional fortifications. Instead of stone and mortar, God's presence is the impenetrable defense, a 'wall of fire' that consumes any threat. His glory residing within the city ensures its security and its splendor.
