Zechariah 14:16-17
This page isn't yet indexed by search engines.
What's stunning here is that Zechariah describes former enemies of God's people not just surviving, but willingly ascending to worship. This isn't about forced submission, but a radical transformation where those who once attacked Jerusalem now join its joyous celebration, pointing to a future where even past adversaries become devoted followers.
Then everyone who survives of all the nations that have come against Jerusalem shall go up year after year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the Feast of Booths. And if any of the families of the earth do not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, there will be no rain on them.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This prophecy concludes Zechariah's vision with a dramatic picture of future worship after God's judgment on hostile nations. Instead of continued conflict, the survivors from these defeated peoples will be transformed, repenting and journeying to Jerusalem annually. They will join in celebrating God's kingship, specifically observing the Feast of Tabernacles, signifying a new era of peace and devotion where former enemies become devoted worshippers.
Imagine the armies that once sought to destroy Jerusalem now marching to worship there. How does this radical shift happen?
This verse paints a stunning picture: survivors from nations that once attacked Jerusalem will not only live but will also choose to go and worship the Lord of Hosts. This isn't about forced submission, but a transformation of the heart. God's judgment, while severe, is also a purifying force that leads some to repentance and willing obedience. Those who were enemies become friends, their past hostility forgiven and their new service accepted by God. It’s a powerful reminder that God’s grace can completely change hearts that were once set against Him.
Why the Feast of Tabernacles specifically? What does this ancient celebration tell us about future worship?
The Feast of Tabernacles (or Booths) commemorated Israel's forty years wandering in the wilderness, living in temporary shelters, and God's faithful provision. It was a time of rejoicing and thanksgiving for deliverance and protection. When this feast is mentioned in relation to future Gentile worship, it symbolizes more than just an annual event. It represents a continuous life of faith characterized by detachment from worldly comforts ('dwelling in booths') and constant joy in God's presence and provision – a spiritual pilgrimage. It points to a worship that acknowledges our temporary status on earth while celebrating God's sustaining grace.

The enemies of Jerusalem will worship there. What does this say about the ultimate scope of God's reign?
This prophecy culminates in a vision of universal worship directed towards 'the King, the LORD of hosts' in Jerusalem. It signifies that God's sovereignty will be universally acknowledged. The location—Jerusalem—becomes the focal point for this global homage, symbolizing God's ultimate authority and the gathering place for His redeemed people. It’s not just about a specific religious ritual, but about the recognition of the one true God as King over all nations, a stark contrast to the hostility previously directed towards His chosen city.
