Imagine holding a cup so intoxicating that it brings ruin to whoever drinks from it. This is the image God uses for Jerusalem. Why would a beloved city be described this way?
God declares, 'I will make Jerusalem a cup of staggering to all the surrounding peoples.' This imagery is powerful. It’s not that Jerusalem itself is inherently dangerous, but God is turning Jerusalem into a divine instrument of judgment.
A Bitter Draught
The nations around Jerusalem will be drawn to it, perhaps with plans of conquest or control. But when they attempt to 'drink' from this cup, they will be met with confusion, staggering, and ultimate defeat. This 'cup' represents God’s judgment poured out on those who oppose His purposes for Jerusalem.
More Than Just a City
Scholars note that this 'cup' is a potent symbol of God's wrath. Just as Isaiah describes God taking the 'cup of trembling' from Jerusalem and putting it into the hands of her oppressors, here God is actively preparing a 'cup' of His fury for those who target Jerusalem.
This means that the trouble the nations bring upon Jerusalem will ultimately become their own downfall, orchestrated by God.
