Who is this 'shepherd' God is raising up? And why would God orchestrate the rise of such a destructive figure?
Zechariah paints a grim picture of a shepherd who embodies the exact opposite of a loving caretaker. This isn't just a bad leader; it's a figure God raises up.
Divine Providence, Human Choice
This doesn't mean God approves of the shepherd's evil actions. Instead, it speaks to God's sovereign hand in history. He can use even wicked people and events as instruments for His purposes, often as a form of judgment. The people's rejection of the good shepherd (implied in the context of Zechariah 11) leads God to allow or even empower a terrible one.
The Opposite of the Good Shepherd
This shepherd's actions are a stark contrast to the ideal shepherd. Instead of seeking the lost, healing the wounded, and nourishing the healthy, he devours, tears, and destroys. He preys on the very flock he's meant to protect.
