God isn't just bringing His people back from exile; He's bringing them into a land so overflowing with His blessing that they will find themselves with barely enough room to stand, a powerful image of abundance and restoration beyond their wildest dreams. This overwhelming return, described as filling the ancient territories of Gilead and Lebanon, points to a future where His people are so numerous and so fully restored that they quite literally overflow the boundaries of their homeland.
I will bring them home from the land of Egypt, and gather them from Assyria, and I will bring them to the land of Gilead and to Lebanon, till there is no room for them. He shall pass through the sea of troubles and strike down the waves of the sea, and all the depths of the Nile shall be dried up. The pride of Assyria shall be laid low, and the scepter of Egypt shall depart.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This verse is part of a powerful prophecy about God's future restoration of His people, specifically focusing on the scattered descendants of Joseph (also called Ephraim or the house of Israel). After speaking of Judah's salvation, Zechariah turns to the northern tribes, who had been exiled to places like Assyria, and even those who fled to Egypt. The promise here is that God will powerfully gather them from these far-flung places of dispersion and bring them back to their ancestral lands, so numerous that their homeland will overflow.
Where does God promise to bring His people? It might be bigger than you think.
Zechariah 10:10 paints a picture of God gathering His scattered people not just from immediate places of exile like Egypt and Assyria, but these locations often symbolize broader regions of dispersion and spiritual bondage throughout history.
Imagine a place so full, you can barely fit. That's the promise for God's people.
Zechariah vividly describes the returnees being brought to 'the land of Gilead and Lebanon.' These regions, north and east of the Jordan River, were rich and fertile parts of their original inheritance.
