The verse highlights that God's "kindness" (a gentle, easy goodness) and "love toward man" (a deep affection for humanity) are not just abstract qualities, but active forces that "appeared" – they were revealed in a tangible way. This revelation wasn't a reward for our goodness, but the very reason we were saved.
But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The Apostle Paul is contrasting the previous state of believers, characterized by foolishness, disobedience, and hatred, with their current transformed lives. He explains that this radical change wasn't due to their own good deeds but was entirely initiated by God's profound kindness and love for humanity, which manifested in His saving work. This divine initiative is what set the stage for their salvation and new life.
Ever wonder if God's goodness is just a reaction, or something deeper? This verse points to an inherent quality within God Himself.
The word 'kindness' (chrestotes) here describes God's essential, native goodness. It's not just about doing good things; it's about being good. Think of it like a perfectly ripe fruit that naturally gives off a sweet aroma. God's kindness is this inherent disposition to do good, to be gracious, and to have an eagerness to bless.
This wasn't a new thought that popped into God's head; it was there from eternity. It's a core part of His character. While this goodness always existed, it 'appeared' or was made visible to humanity through His actions: sending Jesus and His Spirit, and applying salvation to our lives.
Beyond His general goodness, God reveals a specific, personal affection for humanity. What does this 'love toward man' truly signify?
The phrase 'love toward man' (philanthropia) captures God's special affection for humanity. It's more than just a general goodwill; it's a deep-seated love for people. This term highlights God's active concern and benevolent disposition towards humankind.
This concept is crucial because it stands in contrast to how people might act. While humans can be fickle, God's love is constant and intentional towards us. This philanthropic love was the foundation for His saving plan, and its appearance is what brings us salvation.

Kindness; crhstoths the word signifies one’s easiness to do good to another; that native goodness that is in God, rendering him inclinable to love, and prone to do good unto the sons of men.
