Come, my beloved, let us go out into the fields and lodge in the villages; let us go out early to the vineyards and see whether the vines have budded, whether the grape blossoms have opened and the pomegranates are in bloom. There I will give you my love. The mandrakes give forth fragrance, and beside our doors are all choice fruits, new as well as old, which I have laid up for you, O my beloved.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This verse emerges from a tender, intimate dialogue between the Shulamite woman and her beloved, the king. She's just passionately described his physical beauty and the intoxicating effect he has on her, even comparing him to fine wines and spices. Now, she's inviting him to leave the confines of the city and escape with her into the natural world, suggesting a desire for a more rustic, private experience together.
Imagine stepping out of comfort and into the unknown, hand-in-hand. This verse isn't just about a romantic getaway; it's a profound invitation.
A Call to Shared Experience
In Song of Solomon, we see intimate moments, but here, the invitation is to move from private spaces to the wider world: 'let us go out into the fields and lodge in the villages.' This isn't a retreat from life, but an embrace of it, together.
It signifies a desire to deepen their bond not just in secluded intimacy, but through shared experiences and adventures in the ordinary, everyday world. It’s about finding God’s presence and beauty not just in the sacred or the secluded, but in the vastness of creation and the life of community.
Sometimes, the most sacred moments aren't in grand cathedrals, but under an open sky. This verse points to the sacredness found in simple, shared life.
Finding God in the Everyday
The call to 'go out into the fields and lodge in the villages' is a beautiful picture of finding joy and intimacy in the natural world and among ordinary people. It’s about experiencing life’s simple rhythms together – the changing seasons, the sounds of nature, the fellowship of community.
This invites us to see our own shared lives, even the mundane parts, as potential spaces for divine encounter. The love celebrated here isn't just passionate romance; it's a deep companionship that finds fulfillment in the shared journey of life, wherever it leads.
