English Standard Version (ESV)
This passage opens the Song of Solomon with a woman expressing her passionate desire for her lover. She's not just in love; she's utterly captivated, comparing his affection to a sweetness and intoxication far superior to even the finest wine, setting a tone of intense romantic longing that the rest of the Song will explore.
Have you ever felt a deep longing for closeness with someone? The bride in Song of Solomon expresses a profound desire that sets the tone for this passionate book.
A Deep Desire
The bride's opening words, "Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth!" aren't just a casual request. They are a powerful expression of her yearning for intimate connection with her beloved.
This isn't about a fleeting physical touch; it's about a desire for the deep, personal, and affirming affection that only her beloved can give. It speaks to a need for closeness that goes beyond the superficial, reaching into the heart of their relationship.
We often seek things that give us pleasure or exhilaration. But what if there's a source of joy far more satisfying and enduring?
The Sweetness of True Love
The bride immediately follows her plea with a declaration: "For your love is better than wine." This comparison is striking!
Wine in ancient cultures was associated with celebration, joy, and even a form of intoxication that could lift the spirits. Yet, the bride declares that the love she receives from her beloved surpasses even this potent symbol of pleasure. Her beloved's love is not just enjoyable; it's fundamentally more satisfying, more life-giving, and more precious.
