Ruth 4:14-17

What does Ruth 4:14-17 mean?

The women aren't just congratulating Naomi on a new grandchild; they're specifically highlighting that God has provided a kinsman-redeemer, a crucial role in ancient Israelite law. This blessing points not only to the baby, Obed, but also to Boaz, who fulfilled this vital duty and secured Naomi's family line and inheritance.

Then the women said to Naomi, “Blessed be the LORD, who has not left you this day without a redeemer, and may his name be renowned in Israel! He shall be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age, for your daughter-in-law who loves you, who is more to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.” Then Naomi took the child and laid him on her lap and became his nurse. And the women of the neighborhood gave him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi.” They named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.

What Ruth 4:14-17 means

The women of Bethlehem are celebrating the birth of Ruth's son, a child who represents hope and continuity for Naomi, who had been left widowed and childless in a foreign land. This joyous occasion highlights Boaz's faithful role as a kinsman-redeemer, stepping in to secure Naomi's lineage and property, fulfilling the covenant promises of Israel. The women's words anticipate a bright future for this child, linking him to God's ongoing work and setting the stage for his descendant, King David, and ultimately, the Messiah.

The Faithful Kinsman Redeemed

Naomi's world was once defined by loss. Now, a joyful cry rings out! What does 'kinsman' really mean in this moment?

The word for 'kinsman' here, goel in Hebrew, carries a powerful meaning: redeemer. It wasn't just about family ties; it was about responsibility. When Naomi's first husband died, she lost her husband, her sons, and her financial security. The goel had a duty to step in, to protect the family's land and lineage. While the text focuses on the joy of the newborn son, the women's words point to Boaz, the faithful goel. He stepped up where another failed, redeeming Naomi's land and, crucially, marrying Ruth to continue her deceased husband's line. This wasn't just a business transaction; it was an act of profound loyalty and love, bringing security and hope back into Naomi's life.

From Bethlehem's Joy to Israel's Hope

A baby boy is born! It's a cause for celebration in Bethlehem, but this child's significance reaches far beyond this small town.

The birth of Obed, Ruth and Boaz's son, is a pivotal moment. The women's exclamation, "may his name be renowned in Israel!" isn't just a casual wish for a good reputation. It's a prophetic glimpse into the future. This child, born through a Moabite woman and a faithful Israelite redeemer, becomes the ancestor of King David. Think about that! This humble birth in Bethlehem is a critical step in God's plan to bring forth the lineage that would eventually lead to Jesus, the ultimate Redeemer. The hope of Israel, and indeed the world, is quietly taking root in this unexpected place, through this unlikely family.
