Ruth 4:13-22

What does Ruth 4:13-22 mean?

The verse highlights that "the LORD gave her conception," emphasizing that even something as natural as fertility is a gift from God, not something taken for granted. This underscores that every blessing, including the continuation of a lineage, rests entirely on His gracious provision.

So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife. And he went in to her, and the LORD gave her conception, and she bore a son. Then the women said to Naomi, “Blessed be the LORD, who has not left you this day without a redeemer, and may his name be renowned in Israel! He shall be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age, for your daughter-in-law who loves you, who is more to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.” Then Naomi took the child and laid him on her lap and became his nurse. And the women of the neighborhood gave him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi.” They named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David. Now these are the generations of Perez: Perez fathered Hezron, Hezron fathered Ram, Ram fathered Amminadab, Amminadab fathered Nahshon, Nahshon fathered Salmon, Salmon fathered Boaz, Boaz fathered Obed, Obed fathered Jesse, and Jesse fathered David.

What Ruth 4:13-22 means

Following the legal procedures to redeem Naomi's land and marry Ruth, Boaz now takes her as his wife. The Lord blesses their union, and Ruth conceives, giving birth to a son who will become a pivotal figure in Israel's history and, ultimately, in the lineage of King David.

God's Sovereign Hand in Conception

In a world often focused on human effort and planning, this verse reminds us where true fruitfulness comes from. Even in the intimate act of marriage, a greater power is at work.

The text plainly states, 'the LORD gave her conception.' This isn't just a passive observation; it's an active acknowledgment of God's sovereignty over life itself. In ancient Near Eastern cultures, it was common to attribute conception to divine intervention, but here, it specifically points to the God of Israel. This highlights that God is not distant from our lives, but intimately involved in the creation of new life. It's a profound truth that our ability to conceive and bear children, and indeed all life's advancements, are gifts from His hand.

Proselyte Status Over Ethnic Law

Ruth was a Moabite, and ancient laws had strict boundaries. How could Boaz marry her? This verse reveals a crucial understanding of God's grace that transcends ethnic restrictions.

The commentators point out that Boaz could marry Ruth, despite her Moabite heritage, because her status had changed. The prohibition against Moabites entering the 'congregation of the Lord' (Deuteronomy 23:3) was understood to apply to those who remained in their heathen ways. Ruth, however, had become a sincere proselyte, abandoning her gods and people to follow the God of Israel. This demonstrates a vital principle: genuine faith and conversion supersede ethnic or national barriers in God's eyes. Boaz's marriage to Ruth wasn't a violation of the law, but an embrace of God's redemptive plan that included Gentiles who turned to Him.

The Seed of Hope for All Nations

The birth of this child isn't just a happy ending for Boaz and Ruth. It’s the pivotal moment that sets in motion a lineage leading to the greatest King and the blessing of the entire world.
