The elders bless Ruth not just to be fruitful, but to be like Rachel and Leah, who, despite their foreign origins, became the matriarchs who "built up the house of Israel." This highlights a profound hope that Ruth, a Moabite outsider, would be integral to God's redemptive lineage, mirroring the faith and significance of these foundational women.
Then all the people who were at the gate and the elders said, “We are witnesses. May the LORD make the woman, who is coming into your house, like Rachel and Leah, who together built up the house of Israel. May you act worthily in Ephrathah and be renowned in Bethlehem, and may your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, because of the offspring that the LORD will give you by this young woman.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Boaz has just publicly declared his intention to redeem the land and take Ruth as his wife, before the elders and the townspeople gathered at the city gate. This declaration follows the kinsman-redeemer's refusal, making the transaction official and witnessed by all present. The people and elders now bless Boaz and Ruth, praying that their union will be fruitful and that Boaz will continue to act with honor and gain renown in their hometown.
Imagine a whole town gathered, their eyes fixed on you. This wasn't just a wedding; it was a public affirmation of God's work.
The people and elders at the gate weren't just onlookers; they were formal witnesses. Their declaration, 'We are witnesses,' established the legitimacy of Boaz's union with Ruth and the transfer of property. This public declaration underscores that God's redemptive plan wasn't hidden but unfolded openly, with human participation and affirmation. It highlights how ordinary communities can be part of extraordinary divine purposes.
Think about it: This moment in Bethlehem was not just about Ruth and Boaz. It was a public act in the unfolding story of God's faithfulness, setting the stage for the lineage that would eventually lead to King David and, ultimately, Jesus.
The blessing invokes the names of Rachel and Leah, women of immense significance. What does it mean for Ruth to be compared to them?
The elders invoke Rachel and Leah, the wives who birthed the twelve tribes of Israel. Their blessing for Ruth is profound: 'May the LORD make the woman, who is coming into your house, like Rachel and Leah, who together built up the house of Israel.' This wish goes beyond mere fertility; it's a prayer for Ruth to be a foundational matriarch, contributing significantly to the continuation and flourishing of God's people.
It's significant that these two matriarchs, often portrayed with complex family dynamics and personal struggles, are chosen. They represent faithfulness and fruitfulness within God's covenant, even amidst human imperfection. Ruth, a foreigner, is now being prayerfully woven into this same legacy of building God's people.

The blessing extends to Boaz: 'May you act worthily... and be renowned.' This isn't about heroic battles, but about faithful living.
The second part of the blessing focuses on Boaz: 'May you act worthily in Ephrathah and be renowned in Bethlehem.' The phrase 'act worthily' carries a sense of strength, valor, and doing what is right, even when it's difficult. It's a call for integrity and courageous faithfulness in his daily life and responsibilities.
'Be renowned' doesn't necessarily mean fame on a global scale, but rather to have a good name and reputation within his community. Boaz had already shown 'worth' in his kindness to Ruth (Ruth 3:11). This blessing is a prayer that his virtuous actions would continue, bringing honor not only to himself but also to his family and his hometown of Bethlehem.
