Ruth 1:11-13

What does Ruth 1:11-13 mean?

Naomi's question about having more sons isn't just about her age; it's a pointed reminder of the ancient law that a brother would marry his deceased brother's widow. She’s highlighting that this potential path to security for them is completely closed, as she has no more sons who could fulfill that role. This sharpens the focus on their difficult choice: follow her into a life of uncertainty, or return to their familiar homes.

But Naomi said, “Turn back, my daughters; why will you go with me? Have I yet sons in my womb that they may become your husbands? Turn back, my daughters; go your way, for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say I have hope, even if I should have a husband this night and should bear sons, would you therefore wait till they were grown? Would you therefore refrain from marrying? No, my daughters, for it is exceedingly bitter to me for your sake that the hand of the LORD has gone out against me.”

What Ruth 1:11-13 means

Naomi, now widowed and having lost both her sons in Moab, decides to return to Bethlehem, her homeland. She urges her Moabite daughters-in-law, Orpah and Ruth, to return to their own families, recognizing that her life's prospects are bleak. She points out the impossibility of them marrying her yet-to-be-born sons, alluding to the ancient custom of levirate marriage where a brother-in-law would marry a widow to provide offspring.

The Harsh Logic of Loss

Naomi's heart is heavy with grief and her future looks bleak. She tries to break the bond with her daughters-in-law, not out of cruelty, but out of a deep, painful realism.

Naomi has lost her husband and both her sons. She's in a foreign land, facing old age with no support. Her desperate plea, 'Turn back, my daughters,' isn't about pushing them away lightly. It's her facing the brutal truth of her own situation and trying to spare them further hardship. She highlights her own inability to provide any future for them, making it clear that her journey back to Bethlehem offers no new marriage prospects or security. Her focus is on their well-being, even if it means enduring their departure.

Echoes of the Levirate Law

Naomi’s question about having more sons isn't just about her age; it’s a reference to an ancient marriage custom that held significant social and familial weight.

Naomi alludes to the Levirate law, a custom (later codified in Deuteronomy 25:5-10) where a brother was expected to marry the widow of his deceased brother who died without children. The children born from this union were considered heirs of the deceased brother. Naomi is essentially saying, 'I have no more sons to offer you. Even if I were to miraculously have more sons, you couldn't possibly wait for them to grow up and become husbands.' This custom, known even in Moab, was a way to ensure a man's name and lineage continued. By bringing it up, Naomi is starkly illustrating that any hope of a future for her daughters-in-law through her family line is gone.
