Romans 9:32-33

The verse highlights that Israel didn't fail because they didn't seek righteousness diligently, but because their pursuit was misdirected. They looked for it as if their own efforts could achieve it, completely missing that the "stumbling stone"—Christ—was precisely the key to the righteousness they craved.
Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone, as it is written, “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul is explaining why Israel, despite diligently pursuing righteousness through the Law, failed to attain it, while the Gentiles, who weren't even seeking it, found it through faith. He clarifies that Israel's pursuit was misplaced, focusing on their own actions ("works of the law") rather than trusting in God's provision. This ultimately led them to reject Christ, the very "stumblingstone" God had placed for salvation, causing their downfall.
Have you ever felt like you had to earn God's favor? The Israelites in Paul's day certainly did, and it led them down the wrong path.
Paul highlights a crucial misunderstanding among the Israelites: they weren't pursuing God's righteousness through faith, but rather through their own efforts and adherence to the law. The phrase 'as if it were based on works' points to their belief that justification could be achieved by meticulously following rules and rituals. This wasn't about genuine obedience born of love, but a transactional approach where they thought they could merit God's approval.
What happens when the very thing meant to be a solid foundation becomes an obstacle? For many Israelites, Jesus was that unexpected obstacle.
The verse culminates with the image of Israel stumbling over 'the stumbling stone.' This refers to Jesus Christ himself. For those seeking righteousness through their own efforts, the message of salvation through faith in a crucified Messiah was deeply offensive and illogical. They expected a conquering king who would uphold their traditions, not a Savior whose power was revealed through weakness and sacrifice.
