Romans 9:10-16

What does Romans 9:10-16 mean?

What's easy to miss here is that Paul isn't just adding another example; he's specifically highlighting that this divine selection happens even within the promised line. While Ishmael was born of a slave woman, Jacob and Esau were twins from Isaac's wife, Rebecca, demonstrating that God's choice isn't about our lineage or effort, but purely His sovereign will.

And not only so, but also when Rebekah had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac, though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad—in order that God’s purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of him who calls— she was told, “The older will serve the younger.” As it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.” What shall we say then? Is there injustice on God’s part? By no means! For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.

What Romans 9:10-16 means

Paul is building his case for God’s sovereign choice, showing that it's not based on natural descent or human merit. After discussing Abraham's sons Ishmael and Isaac, he moves to Isaac's twin sons, Jacob and Esau, who had the same father and mother. This highlights that even within the same family, God’s election operates according to His will, not human expectations.

The Problem of Parental Unity

Paul's argument hinges on a family drama. He's moving from Abraham's sons to Isaac's sons, and there's a key difference he wants us to notice.

In the previous example (Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar), Ishmael and Isaac didn't share the same mother. This difference allowed for potential objections about why Ishmael was rejected. Paul anticipates this and introduces the story of Rebekah's twins, Jacob and Esau.

A Shared Beginning

Jacob and Esau, unlike Ishmael and Isaac, were born of the same mother (Rebekah) and conceived by the same father (Isaac). They were twins, literally sharing the same womb. This shared biological origin is crucial because it removes any outward, natural reason for God to choose one over the other based on their immediate family circumstances.

Election Before Actions

Paul is building a case for God's sovereign choice. The next step involves showing that this choice wasn't based on anything the individuals themselves did.

The critical point Paul makes about Jacob and Esau is that God's decision about them was declared before they were even born, and certainly before they had done anything good or evil.

No Merit, All Mercy

This timing is essential. If God chose Jacob over Esau after they had lived and acted, one might argue that God simply foresaw Jacob's good deeds or Esau's bad ones and chose accordingly. But by making the distinction known while they were still in the womb, Paul demonstrates that God's selection isn't based on human merit or actions. It's a choice rooted purely in God's own purpose and good pleasure.
