Romans 8:5-9

What does Romans 8:5-9 mean?

What's often missed is that "mind" here doesn't just mean to think about something; it's about what you actively desire, pursue, and find your delight in. Paul is saying that people are fundamentally defined by the main focus of their inner world—either it's consumed with what the flesh craves, or it's captivated by what the Spirit reveals and inspires.

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.

What Romans 8:5-9 means

Paul is contrasting two fundamental ways of living to underscore the radical transformation that occurs when God's Spirit takes hold of us. He's building on his previous point that believers are no longer condemned, explaining that this freedom comes from living according to the Spirit, not the flesh. This verse sets the stage for understanding that these two "minds" or ways of thinking are mutually exclusive and lead to vastly different destinations.

The Two "Minds" That Shape Us

Have you ever felt pulled in two different directions? Paul describes two powerful forces at play within us: the flesh and the Spirit. This verse unpacks what it means to be governed by each.

Paul introduces a fundamental contrast in Romans 8:5 between two distinct ways of living, or "minding."

The Mind of the Flesh:

This refers to a life dominated by our natural desires, our corrupt inclinations, and the things of this world. It's about setting our thoughts, affections, and pursuits on what pleases our senses and our fallen nature. As commentators note, this isn't just about gross sin; it includes a preoccupation with earthly pleasures, status, or possessions, making them the center of our focus and desires.

The Mind of the Spirit:

This is the opposite: a life where our thoughts, desires, and pursuits are directed by the Holy Spirit. It means valuing and seeking after spiritual and eternal realities – things that align with God's will and character. This mindset is a direct result of God's Spirit dwelling within us, actively guiding and transforming our inner world.

Paul presents these as mutually exclusive ways of living. You are either primarily influenced and directed by the flesh, or by the Spirit. There's no neutral ground.

The Ultimate Destination of Each Mind

Where are your daily thoughts and desires ultimately leading you? Paul links each 'mind' to a profound and eternal outcome.

The way we 'mind' – how we think, what we desire, and where we direct our focus – has eternal consequences. Paul makes this starkly clear:
