Romans 8:5-8

What does Romans 8:5-8 mean?

Paul isn't just saying there are two types of people; he's highlighting a deep contrast in what drives their entire being. Those "after the flesh" aren't just occasionally making bad choices, they're actively setting their minds on and delighting in earthly desires, while those "after the Spirit" are truly captivated by the unseen and eternal. This verse reveals that the core of our being—our thoughts, affections, and pursuits—will ultimately align with either the decaying flesh or the life-giving Spirit.

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

What Romans 8:5-8 means

Paul is contrasting two fundamental ways of living to explain what it means to be truly free in Christ. He's just declared that there's no condemnation for those in Christ who walk by the Spirit, and now he's clarifying what that walking entails by showing the stark difference between a life dominated by our sinful nature and one guided by God's Spirit. This verse sets the stage for the rest of the chapter, which explores the power and benefits of living by the Spirit.

The 'Mind' That Defines You

Paul talks about 'minding' the flesh or the Spirit. What does this 'minding' really mean, and how does it shape who you are?

The word Paul uses here, often translated as 'mind' or 'set their minds on,' goes deeper than just thinking.

A Deeper Understanding

It's about your inner disposition, your core focus, and what your desires are directed toward. It's the overall orientation of your inner life.

For the 'flesh': This means being consumed with worldly things – pleasures, status, possessions, or anything that appeals to our sinful nature. Your entire outlook and your deepest desires are geared toward these temporal things.
For the 'Spirit': This means your focus, desires, and affections are set on God, His will, and the eternal realities He reveals. It's a conscious turning of your inner life toward Him and His kingdom.

Two Competing Realms of Life

Paul presents a stark choice: a life ruled by the flesh or a life guided by the Spirit. These aren't just different preferences; they represent two entirely different ways of existing.

This verse isn't just about having different hobbies; it’s about belonging to two fundamentally different realms of influence.
