Romans 7:18-20

What Paul emphasizes here isn't a total lack of good intentions, but a profound inability to execute them. Even though the "desire to do right" is present, the actual carrying out of that good is frustratingly absent, proving that his "flesh" (his fallen, natural self) actively hinders any real progress.
For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul is describing the internal conflict of the believer, wrestling with the ongoing power of sin even after accepting Christ. He's already established that sin itself, not his flesh, is the culprit dwelling within him. Here, he clarifies that while the desire for good is present, his ability to consistently carry it out is hindered by this indwelling sin, leading to a deep sense of frustration and helplessness in his own power.
Paul declares bluntly that 'nothing good dwells' in him. What does he mean by 'flesh,' and why is it so thoroughly described as a place devoid of good?
Paul uses the term 'flesh' here to refer to his unredeemed, natural humanity – his corrupt inclinations, desires, and the whole aspect of himself that is still subject to the power of sin, even after becoming a believer.

Paul knows what's right and even desires it, but he can't 'perform' it. What does this tension between willing and doing reveal about our spiritual condition?
This is the heart-wrenching paradox Paul experiences: the capacity to recognize and even desire good is present, but the ability to consistently carry it out is missing.
Understand the original words
sarx · Greek Noun
Refers to the fallen, sinful human nature characterized by rebellion against God, worldly appetites, and susceptibility to temptation. It denotes the sphere of life apart from the renewing work of the Holy Spirit, inherently opposed to God's will.
thelēma · Greek Noun
An active, willful movement of the heart toward an objective. In a spiritual sense, it represents the intention or longing of the human will, which may be directed toward righteousness but is often hindered by the corruption of sin.
kalos · Greek Adjective
A moral and ethical quality that aligns with God’s standard of justice, truth, and uprightness. It describes actions and attitudes that are inherently correct according to divine revelation.
kakos · Greek Adjective/Noun
Refers to moral wickedness, corruption, and whatever is opposed to God’s holiness and will. It encompasses both the internal state of rebellion and the external deeds that violate God’s commands.
This verse powerfully echoes Paul's sentiment, stating that 'every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.' It highlights the deep-seated corruption in humanity that makes true good difficult to achieve from within.
Jeremiah 17:9Similar to Paul's confession, this verse declares, 'The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?' This speaks to the inherent struggle and the inability of the natural human heart to consistently produce good on its own.
Galatians 5:17This passage provides a parallel to Paul's internal conflict, stating that 'the flesh desires what it wants against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh. These are in opposition to each other, so that you cannot do whatever you want.' It clarifies the ongoing battle between our sinful nature and the Spirit's promptings.
Philippians 2:13While Romans 7:18 highlights the *inability* to perform good, Philippians 2:13 points to the *source* of ability: 'for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.' This offers a crucial contrast, showing where the power to overcome the flesh's limitations ultimately comes from.
