Romans 7:15-20

What does Romans 7:15-20 mean?

Paul isn't just saying he's bad at following through; he's revealing a deep internal division where his actions are so alien to his true self that he says, "I don't even recognize what I'm doing." This isn't about knowing how to do something, but about a fundamental disconnect from the action itself, feeling like it's happening to him rather than by him.

For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.

What Romans 7:15-20 means

Paul is describing a deep internal conflict where his own actions feel alien to him. He's wrestling with the reality that despite desiring to do good, he finds himself compelled to do things he knows are wrong and even despises. This struggle highlights the pervasive power of sin that even affects those who are striving to live righteously.

The Struggle Between Two Wills

Ever feel like you're fighting yourself? You know what's right, you even want to do it, but then... you don't. And you end up doing the very thing you despise.

Paul vividly describes this internal battle in Romans 7:15. He's not talking about someone who hasn't met God, but someone who knows God's law and desires to follow it. Yet, he confesses, 'For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.'

This isn't a contradiction; it's a description of the tension every believer experiences:

The Higher Desire: There's a genuine desire for God's will, a longing to live righteously. This 'wanting' is the work of the Spirit within, aligning your heart with God's commands.
The Lower Resistance: However, the 'old self,' the flesh with its ingrained habits and desires, still exerts a powerful pull. This inner conflict causes confusion and distress, leading to actions that feel alien and detestable.
The Unwanted Accomplishment: The result? You find yourself doing things you inwardly condemn. It’s like being in a tug-of-war, where a force you can't fully control drags you in a direction you desperately want to avoid.

Sin's Deceptive Mastery

Why do we do what we hate? Paul points to a powerful, almost deceptive, force at work within us that compels us against our better judgment.

Paul's words, 'For I do not understand my own actions... but I do the very thing I hate,' reveal the insidious power of sin. It's not just an occasional slip-up; it's a deep-seated tendency that operates even when our conscious will is set against it.
