Paul isn't just saying he messes up; he's highlighting the shocking disconnect between his deepest desires and his actions. The core issue isn't a lack of knowing what's right, but an inability to consistently do it, a profound internal conflict where his true intentions are constantly undermined by a power he hates.
For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul is describing a deep internal struggle, a battle within himself. He's just explained how the Law, meant to be holy, revealed sin and brought about his death. Now, he delves into the paradox of experiencing this Law's power firsthand, feeling a constant push-and-pull between what he knows is right and what he finds himself doing. He's not describing someone outside of God's grace, but rather the honest, often frustrating, experience of a believer who desires God's will but is still battling the flesh.
Ever feel like you're doing things you don't want to do, even things you hate? Paul describes this struggle in stark terms, revealing a deep internal war.
Paul uses strong language to describe his own actions under the influence of sin. He says, 'For that which I do I allow not.' The original Greek here suggests 'I do not accomplish' or 'I do not perform.' It's like a slave carrying out a task assigned by a cruel master, not understanding the full implications of the deed, or perhaps doing it in a kind of daze.
He clarifies this by saying, 'For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.' This isn't about a casual dislike; it's a deep-seated opposition. The 'want' represents his true desire, aligned with God's will, while the 'hate' signifies an abhorrence of the sinful actions he finds himself performing. This is the paradox of being 'sold under sin' – an unwilling participant in actions that go against his core being.
Is this struggle a sign of spiritual failure, or something else entirely? Paul's words reveal a surprising truth about the believer's inner life.
The crucial insight here is who is speaking. Many scholars, looking at the depth of this internal conflict and the 'hatred' for sin described, argue this passage (Romans 7:14-25) describes the experience of a regenerate person – someone who has truly turned to Christ.
Why is this significant? Because an unregenerate person, left to their own 'flesh,' might not truly hate sin or genuinely desire righteousness in this way. They might feel conviction, but not the deep abhorrence and longing for holiness that Paul expresses.

This verse, then, captures the tension of the Christian life: having a renewed spirit that desires God's way, yet still battling the remaining power of sin within. It's a conflict where the true 'self' (the renewed person) detests what the 'flesh' compels them to do.

This verse describes the pervasive sinfulness of humanity before the flood, echoing the deep-seated corruption Paul describes in Romans 7. Both passages highlight the internal conflict between what one knows is right and the actions driven by a fallen nature.
Ecclesiastes 9:3Solomon's observation that 'evil is in all the doings under the sun' resonates with Paul's sense of being trapped in actions he doesn't understand or approve of. It speaks to the universal human experience of grappling with our own flawed behavior.
Mark 14:38Jesus' command to his disciples to 'watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation' acknowledges the reality of spiritual weakness and the struggle against the flesh, which Paul vividly portrays in his own experience.
Galatians 5:17This passage directly parallels Paul's experience in Romans 7, stating that 'the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these two are warring against each other.' It provides a clear theological framework for the internal conflict described.
1 John 1:8John's statement, 'If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us,' provides a crucial context for Paul's confession in Romans 7. It underscores that acknowledging our own flawed actions is a sign of spiritual reality, not a sign of ultimate defeat.
