We often think of earning things, but what if the most important thing we could ever receive is given to us without any cost on our part? This verse reveals a profound truth about how we are declared righteous before God.
The verse begins by stating that believers are 'justified freely'. The word 'freely' here (in the original Greek, doran) emphasizes that this is a gift, unearned and undeserved. It's not based on anything we do or any merit we possess. Think of it like a surprise gift you receive on your birthday that you didn't ask for and haven't earned.
This stands in stark contrast to trying to earn God's favor through good deeds or by keeping the law. The apostle Paul has already established that 'all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God' (Romans 3:23). Because of this universal sinfulness, no one can achieve righteousness on their own.
