The verse isn't just about God judging you based on what you do, but that He'll render judgment in proportion to your actions. This means the moral quality of your deeds, not just the deeds themselves, is what God weighs.
He will render to each one according to his works: to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek,
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul is challenging the self-righteousness of those who judge others, especially the Jews, by arguing that God's judgment is impartial and based on actions, not just outward religious affiliation. He's building towards the crucial point that no one, regardless of their background, can stand before God based on their own merit. This sets the stage for his later argument that salvation comes through faith in Christ, not by adhering to the law.
Ever wonder if God truly sees every action and thought? Paul assures us He does, and He has a perfect system for dealing with it all.
Paul is laying out the foundation of God's unwavering justice. This isn't about a surprise judgment; it's about a divine standard that applies to everyone.
Does 'according to his works' mean we earn God's favor? Paul clarifies a crucial distinction that impacts how we understand salvation and eternal destiny.
This verse is often misunderstood. While God judges according to our deeds, it's vital to grasp that this isn't about earning salvation through merit. The ancient commentators were clear on this distinction:

"Nequaquam tamen quid valeant, sed quid illis debeatur pretii pronunciat" (Calvin). The ground of justification is not here involved. All that is asserted is what is e…
