Ever find yourself quick to label or condemn another Christian? Paul calls out this dangerous habit, reminding us that we aren't the ones in charge.
The Two Sides of Judgment
Paul addresses two specific attitudes:
- Judging (κρίνεις): This is the critical, condemning spirit, often seen in those who feel spiritually superior. You might look down on someone for not meeting your standards.
- Despising (ἐξουθενέεις): This is the dismissive attitude, often from those who feel more liberated. You might look past someone as if they're unimportant or their convictions don't matter.
Both are forms of judgment, and both are rooted in taking God's place. We are called 'brothers' and 'sisters' – equals in the family, not judge and accused.
