Romans 14:10-12
This page isn't yet indexed by search engines.
The verse directly contrasts judging your brother with despising your brother, but the core insight is that both actions are fundamentally misplaced because neither person is the judge. Both the one who judges and the one who despises are acting like they're on the judge's bench, when in reality, we are all heading for God's tribunal, where accountability belongs solely to Him.
Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God; for it is written, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.” So then each of us will give an account of himself to God.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul is addressing a heated dispute within the early church regarding practices like eating certain foods and observing specific days. He's already cautioned both the "strong" Christians (who felt free from old laws) and the "weak" Christians (who were still hesitant) against judging or despising each other. Now, he emphasizes that their focus should be on God's ultimate judgment, not on critiquing fellow believers.
We often think of judgment as just one thing, but Paul points out two dangerous ways we can treat our brothers and sisters in Christ.
Paul directly addresses two destructive attitudes within the church:
Both actions sever the bond of Christian fellowship, creating division where unity should be.
Before we ever stand before each other, we will stand before God. That single truth should change how we treat others.
The reason Paul gives for stopping this internal church conflict is profound: "For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God."

Paul's letter to the Romans grappled with deep-seated issues arising from the integration of Jewish and Gentile believers within the early church. The specific context of divisions over religious laws and practices, particularly those rooted in the Mosaic Law, directly fueled the need for Paul's admonitions on mutual respect and unity.
