The real punch of "owe no one anything" isn't just about avoiding debt; it's about recognizing that love is the only ongoing obligation we have, a debt so profound it can never truly be paid off. This means that truly loving your neighbor isn't just one good deed among many, but the active, continuous fulfillment of all God's commands towards others.
Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
English Standard Version (ESV)
After discussing specific duties like paying taxes and showing respect to governing authorities, Paul shifts to a broader principle governing all our interactions with others. He clarifies that while other debts should be paid off, love for one another is a perpetual debt that can never be fully discharged. This is because loving others encapsulates the fulfillment of all the commands related to how we treat our neighbors.
Ever feel like there's always one more thing to pay off or take care of? Paul uses a common idea of debt to point us to something much bigger.
The apostle Paul starts with a practical, everyday concept: owing money. He'd just told believers to pay their dues to authorities (taxes, respect). Now, he broadens it to all personal debts. We're not to be financially indebted to anyone.
But here's the twist: there's one debt that's different. It's a debt we can never fully pay off, yet it's the only one we should always be paying. That's the debt of love for one another.
What if all the rules and regulations of faith could be boiled down to one simple, powerful principle?
Paul declares that loving one another is the fulfillment of the law. This isn't to say the law is unimportant, but that genuine love is its ultimate goal and essence. Think of it like this: if you truly love your neighbor, you won't steal from them, lie to them, harm them, or covet what they have.
Love doesn't just follow the law; it embodies it. It's the animating spirit that makes all the commandments make sense and work in practice. This principle was so central to Jesus' teaching and the apostles' message, it became the bedrock of Christian ethics.

Love must still remain the root and spring of all your…
