Romans 12:17-21

What does Romans 12:17-21 mean?

It’s easy to read "provide things honorable" as simply meaning "be honest," but the original Greek word here carries a deeper sense of forethought and planning. Paul isn't just telling us to be honest in the moment, but to proactively plan our lives so that our actions, even when facing opposition, will be seen as honorable by everyone.

Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

What Romans 12:17-21 means

Paul is urging believers to live out their transformed faith in practical ways, moving from general principles of love and humility to specific actions. Having just instructed them not to be proud or arrogant, he now details how they should respond to others, especially those who have wronged them, and how they should conduct themselves publicly. This sets the stage for his instruction to be peaceable and overcome evil with good.

The Unyielding Command Against Retaliation

Ever felt the urge to strike back when someone wrongs you? Paul's words here are direct, challenging our natural instincts.

No Evil for Evil

Paul doesn't mince words: "Repay no one evil for evil." This isn't a suggestion; it's a command that cuts against the grain of human nature. When someone insults you, cheats you, or hurts you, the immediate impulse is to retaliate, to make them feel the pain they inflicted. But Christianity calls us to a higher path.

Why This Command is Difficult

It feels unjust: Our sense of fairness often screams that wrongdoers deserve to be punished.
It feels weak: Not fighting back can be perceived as submission or cowardice.
It goes against instinct: Our primal drive is often self-preservation and defense through aggression.

But Paul, echoing Jesus, insists that breaking this cycle of retaliation is essential for the follower of Christ. It’s about trusting God with justice rather than taking it into our own hands.

Proactive Goodness: Beyond Just Not Harming

It's not enough to simply avoid retaliating. Paul calls us to a positive, outward-facing way of living.
