Paul doesn't just state he's an apostle; he emphasizes he was "separated" for the gospel. This "separation" isn't just about being chosen for a task, but signifies being uniquely set apart, distinct from all other purposes, to be God's messenger.
Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul, writing to the church in Rome whom he has never met, begins by establishing his authority. He identifies himself not just as Paul, but as a "servant" and "apostle" of Jesus Christ, chosen and set apart specifically for the purpose of proclaiming God's good news. This opening sets the stage for the weighty theological arguments that follow, emphasizing that the message he's about to deliver comes directly from God through His divinely appointed messenger.
Paul opens this monumental letter not with a title of honor, but with a declaration of his deepest identity. What does it truly mean for him to be a 'servant'?
The Greek word Paul uses, 'doulos,' is stronger than our modern English word 'servant.' It signifies a 'slave' – someone who is not their own, but belongs entirely to another.
In a world where titles could be self-made, Paul stresses that his role as an apostle was a direct appointment from God. What's the significance of this divine calling?
Paul doesn't just say he is an apostle; he emphasizes he was 'called' and 'set apart' for this specific task.
