It's easy to read "a star fallen from heaven" and think of Satan's initial rebellion, but the text specifies this star was given a key to the abyss, indicating a specific, permitted authority granted in this prophetic moment, not just a historical fall. This fallen star, therefore, represents a powerful, delegated agent of evil that God allows to unleash a specific terror upon the earth.
And the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star fallen from heaven to earth, and he was given the key to the shaft of the bottomless pit. He opened the shaft of the bottomless pit, and from the shaft rose smoke like the smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened with the smoke from the shaft. Then from the smoke came locusts on the earth, and they were given power like the power of scorpions of the earth.

This imagery prepares the reader for the release of demonic entities and further spiritual assaults described in the verses that follow.
