What's easy to miss is that the Lamb isn't just symbolic of sacrifice, but actively carries the wounds of being slain, even while standing alive. This imagery highlights that Christ's power and dominion (symbolized by the seven horns and seven eyes representing the full Spirit) are inextricably linked to His atoning sacrifice, not separate from it.
And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth.
English Standard Version (ESV)
John is being shown a vision of heaven, where all creation worships God. Just as he hears about a scroll with seven seals, which only the worthy can open, his attention is drawn to a startling figure standing at the center of divine authority. This figure is identified not as a conquering lion, but as a lamb bearing the marks of a recent slaughter, yet possessing complete power and divine knowledge.
Imagine expecting a roaring lion but finding a gentle lamb. This powerful contrast is key to understanding Jesus in Revelation.
John is told about the "Lion of the tribe of Judah" who is worthy to open the scroll (Revelation 5:5). But when he looks, he sees something astonishing: a Lamb. This isn't just any lamb; it's described as 'a little lamb,' a term of endearment that highlights Jesus' relationship with His people. This imagery forces us to reconcile the conquering King with the suffering Servant. The Lion represents His ultimate authority and power, while the Lamb points to His sacrificial love and victory through suffering. It's the paradox of Christ: power revealed through vulnerability, victory achieved through sacrifice.
This Lamb isn't pristine; He bears the marks of death. Yet, He's standing! What does this profound image reveal about His triumph?
The Lamb 'as though it had been slain' is a powerful depiction of the risen Christ. The wounds are visible – a constant reminder of the immense price paid for our redemption. But He is not dead; He is standing! This signifies His resurrection and ongoing victory over sin and death. His suffering is not a sign of defeat, but the very means by which He achieved ultimate power and secured our salvation. His exaltation comes through His sacrifice, not in spite of it. This visible evidence of His suffering assures us that our redemption is a finished work, secured by a Christ who conquered through death itself.

Seven horns for power, seven eyes for wisdom – these aren't just random features. They signify God's complete work through Christ.
The 'seven horns' symbolize the complete and perfect power of Christ. Horns are ancient symbols of strength and authority, and the number seven signifies fullness. This indicates Jesus possesses all authority in heaven and on earth, enabling Him to conquer all His enemies and accomplish God's will. The 'seven eyes' represent His complete wisdom and omniscience. These are identified as the 'seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth.' This signifies that Christ, through the Holy Spirit, has perfect knowledge and oversight of everything happening globally. He sees all, knows all, and His power is inexhaustible and all-encompassing, directly linked to the manifold operations of the Spirit.
