Beyond the sacrifice, John sees two more incredible details about the Lamb: seven horns and seven eyes. What do these symbols reveal about His authority and action?
The description of the Lamb continues with 'seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God.' These are not arbitrary additions but significant symbolic representations.
Seven Horns: Complete Authority
In the ancient world, horns were symbols of strength, power, and authority. A king might be described as having his horn exalted. The number 'seven' in Revelation consistently signifies completeness or perfection. Therefore, the 'seven horns' indicate that the Lamb possesses absolute, perfect, and unconquerable power. He has all authority needed to execute God's will and defeat all His enemies.
Seven Eyes: All-Seeing Wisdom
Eyes symbolize intelligence, perception, and knowledge. Again, the number 'seven' points to perfection. The 'seven eyes' represent the Lamb's complete, all-knowing wisdom and perfect insight. These are specifically identified as the 'seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth,' signifying that the Holy Spirit, in His fullness and manifold operations, is the instrument of the Lamb's pervasive knowledge and active presence throughout creation.
Together, these symbols show us that the Slain Lamb is not a weak victim but the sovereign Lord, possessing all power and all wisdom to accomplish His divine purposes.
