Revelation lists 'cowardly' and 'faithless' first. What does this tell us about the real danger of fear in our walk with God?
This verse paints a stark picture, but the order matters. Notice how 'cowardly' (often translated 'fearful') and 'faithless' lead the list.
The Danger of Fear
This isn't about a healthy reverence for God. It's about a base, selfish fear – the fear of man, the fear of persecution, the fear of losing comfort or status. When this kind of fear paralyzes us, it can lead us to deny our faith or shrink back from doing what's right.
Faithlessness Follows Fear
It's no surprise that 'faithless' or 'unbelieving' follows closely. When we let fear dictate our lives, our trust in God erodes. We stop believing He can handle our circumstances or that His promises are true. This leads to a spiritual paralysis, a refusal to step out in obedience.
The Opposite of Overcoming
In Revelation, those who 'overcome' are promised a place in God's new creation. The cowardly and faithless are precisely those who don't overcome. They let fear win, and in doing so, they forfeit their inheritance.
