The fact that the measuring rod is golden isn't just about the city's incredible wealth, but it also signifies the divine and perfect nature of the city being measured. Unlike a human measurement, this golden rod indicates that every aspect of this heavenly dwelling is being assessed according to God's own glorious standard.
And the one who spoke with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city and its gates and walls. The city lies foursquare, its length the same as its width. And he measured the city with his rod, 12,000 stadia. Its length and width and height are equal.

It’s about confirming and revealing the city’s divine perfection, its exact proportions, and its secure place in God's eternal plan. The golden reed assures us that this city is perfectly designed by God for His people.
What's the purpose of measuring a city that's meant to be perfect and eternal?
The angel's measuring rod highlights that the heavenly city, New Jerusalem, is not a vague, abstract concept but a perfectly proportioned reality. The measurement confirms its exact dimensions and order.
