This isn't just a lament for a fallen empire, but a stark picture of self-interest: these kings weep not for God's justice, but for the loss of their luxurious lifestyle and the illicit gains they enjoyed through Babylon's corrupt system. Their grief is a selfish sorrow, a mourning for what they have lost, not for the sin itself or the lives it ruined.
And the kings of the earth, who committed sexual immorality and lived in luxury with her, will weep and wail over her when they see the smoke of her burning. They will stand far off, in fear of her torment, and say, “Alas! Alas! You great city, you mighty city, Babylon! For in a single hour your judgment has come.” And the merchants of the earth weep and mourn for her, since no one buys their cargo anymore,
English Standard Version (ESV)
This passage shifts focus to the earthly rulers who were intimately involved with the corrupt system symbolized by Babylon. They had not only engaged in spiritual adultery with her, but also enjoyed a life of luxury and comfort because of her influence. Now, as they witness the smoke of Babylon's complete destruction, their concern isn't for God's justice, but for their own lost privileges and the sudden collapse of their world.
Revelation paints a vivid picture of kings weeping over Babylon's destruction. But why 'sexual immorality'? It wasn't just about literal affairs.
The text uses the imagery of 'sexual immorality' (often translated as 'fornication') to describe the unholy alliance between worldly powers and the corrupt spiritual system represented by Babylon.
A Compromised Relationship
These kings weren't just followers; they were partners. They engaged in a 'spiritual adultery' by aligning their political power with Babylon's deceptive system. This often involved:
This wasn't a relationship based on truth but on a shared pursuit of power, wealth, and pleasure.
The kings weep and wail. Is this genuine grief for a fallen world power, or something far more calculated?
The lament of the kings over Babylon's fall is not a sign of repentance or true sorrow for sin. Instead, it's a deeply selfish reaction driven by loss.
