Revelation 18:5-8

What does Revelation 18:5-8 mean?

The phrase "reached unto heaven" isn't just about the quantity of sin, but how it became so prominent and "stuck" to this entity, essentially cleaving to the heavens and demanding God's attention. It highlights that God notices the accumulated weight and persistence of sin, and this divine remembrance is precisely why judgment is now inevitable.

for her sins are heaped high as heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities. Pay her back as she herself has paid back others, and repay her double for her deeds; mix a double portion for her in the cup she mixed. As she glorified herself and lived in luxury, so give her a like measure of torment and mourning, since in her heart she says, ‘I sit as a queen, I am no widow, and mourning I shall never see.’ For this reason her plagues will come in a single day, death and mourning and famine, and she will be burned up with fire; for mighty is the Lord God who has judged her.”

What Revelation 18:5-8 means

This verse comes as a divine declaration and explanation for the imminent judgment about to befall the great city, often called "Babylon the Great." It follows a powerful angel announcing her impending destruction, emphasizing the sheer volume and severity of her sins which have piled up over time, reaching God's attention. The context highlights that God, who has patiently endured her transgressions, is now ready to bring His justice.

The Gravity of Persistent Sin

Ever felt like God doesn't see your struggles or the world's injustices? This verse reveals a God who does notice, with profound consequences.

The phrase 'her sins have reached unto heaven' isn't about a physical pile of sin touching the sky. Instead, it paints a picture of sin that has become so immense, so pervasive, and so persistent that it has captured God's attention.

A Cry for Justice

Think of it like a desperate cry that travels until it's heard. The sins of this 'Babylon' – representing oppressive and idolatrous systems – have piled up over time, each one adding to the weight. They've become impossible to ignore, 'reaching' heaven not in height, but in their terrible significance and the demand they make for justice.

God's Awareness

This imagery highlights God's perfect knowledge and His ultimate involvement. He is not distant or unaware. When the verse says 'God has remembered her iniquities,' it signifies His decision to act. He doesn't forget, and this 'remembrance' is the prelude to judgment.

The Clinging Nature of Iniquity

Some translations use a unique word here, suggesting sin doesn't just pile up, it 'clings'. What does this imply about its hold?

The original Greek word for 'reached' here is rich with meaning. While translated in various ways, a strong interpretation points to the idea of 'clinging' or 'sticking fast'. This isn't just about the quantity of sin, but its tenacious character.
