Revelation 17:3-7

What does Revelation 17:3-7 mean?

While the "wilderness" might suggest desolation, it’s a stark contrast to the woman's outward splendor, highlighting how spiritual corruption can thrive amidst outward appearances of grandeur, even while claiming to represent God. The scarlet beast, teeming with blasphemous names, shows that this powerful entity is not just politically corrupt but actively defiant against God, and it serves as the very foundation for this deceptive woman.

And he carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness, and I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was full of blasphemous names, and it had seven heads and ten horns. The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and jewels and pearls, holding in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the impurities of her sexual immorality. And on her forehead was written a name of mystery: “Babylon the great, mother of prostitutes and of earth’s abominations.” And I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints, the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. When I saw her, I marveled greatly. But the angel said to me, “Why do you marvel? I will tell you the mystery of the woman, and of the beast with seven heads and ten horns that carries her.

English Standard Version (ESV)

What Revelation 17:3-7 means

John is carried in a vision to a desolate place, a wilderness, where he sees a symbolic vision unfolding. This scene follows descriptions of judgment and divine power, setting the stage for identifying a major corrupt religious and political entity. The woman riding the scarlet beast is directly linked to the corrupt system that persecutes God's people and exercises worldly power, contrasting with the purity of God's church.

Carried Away into a Wilderness

John is suddenly transported to a desolate place, a stark contrast to the grandeur he's about to witness. What does this 'wilderness' signify?

The vision transports John into a spiritual 'wilderness.' This isn't just a physical desert, but a symbol of desolation and spiritual barrenness. It's a place removed from the familiar, where God can reveal profound truths.

A Place of Revelation: Like the prophets of old who encountered God in desolate places, John is taken here to see something crucial about God's judgment and the forces opposing His kingdom.
Contrast with Splendor: The desolate wilderness contrasts sharply with the opulent, yet corrupted, woman and the beast. This highlights the deceptive nature of worldly power and influence; true spiritual life is found elsewhere.
A Spiritual Landscape: For some interpreters, this wilderness specifically points to the state of Europe or the region around Rome during periods of decline or spiritual emptiness, setting the stage for the rise of new, albeit ungodly, powers.

The Woman and the Scarlet Beast

A richly adorned woman sits on a terrifying beast covered in blasphemy. Who are they, and what does their unholy union represent?

This powerful image depicts a corrupted spiritual entity (the woman) in league with a dominant, blasphemous world power (the beast).
