The angel invites John not just to see judgment, but to understand God's reckoning—what the ancient texts call "the account" or "the justice" of this powerful, corrupt figure. This isn't just about punishment, but about revealing the true nature and ultimate consequence of her actions.
Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the judgment of the great prostitute who is seated on many waters, with whom the kings of the earth have committed sexual immorality, and with the wine of whose sexual immorality the dwellers on earth have become drunk.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
An angel, one of those who poured out the bowls of God's wrath, approaches John and invites him to witness the impending judgment of a powerful, corrupt figure described as a "great prostitute." This vision immediately follows the pouring out of the bowls and delves deeper into the nature and ultimate downfall of the spiritual and political forces that have seduced the world, drawing parallels to ancient Babylon's idolatry and empire.
An angel, one of those who carried God's final judgments, appears with a direct summons. What does this reveal about the message to come?
The vision begins with a powerful divine invitation. An angel, specifically one of the seven carrying the bowls of God's wrath (Revelation 15-16), steps forward. This isn't just any angel; he's a messenger of the final judgments. His words, 'Come, I will show you...' signal that what John is about to see is crucial, directly connected to God's ultimate reckoning. This immediate introduction of judgment underscores the gravity and divine origin of the vision about to unfold.
The vision centers on a 'great prostitute.' What does this powerful image symbolize in the context of biblical prophecy?
The term 'great prostitute' (or 'great whore') is a potent biblical metaphor. It doesn't refer to literal sexual immorality, but to spiritual unfaithfulness. Just as an unfaithful wife betrays her husband, this 'prostitute' represents a religious or political entity that has abandoned its true devotion to God for worldly power, wealth, or idolatry. The 'many waters' she sits upon are explained later in Revelation 17:15 as 'peoples, multitudes, nations, and tongues,' indicating her vast, widespread influence and dominion over many people.
The angel is here to reveal 'the judgment.' Why is this specific judgment so significant in the unfolding narrative of Revelation?
Ask a follow-up
This vision is not merely descriptive; it's about 'judgment.' The angel's purpose is to reveal the condemnation and ultimate downfall of this powerful, unfaithful entity. This is a pivotal moment in Revelation, showing that God will not allow persistent spiritual adultery and corruption to go unpunished. The 'judgment' signifies God's righteous intervention to bring an end to her destructive influence and to hold her accountable for her actions, particularly her persecution of God's people.
