It's not just the fish that perish; the judgment is absolute, affecting every living thing within this corrupted sea.
The verse states, 'and every living thing died that was in the sea.' This emphasizes the comprehensive nature of God's wrath poured out in these vials.
A Total Loss of Life
This isn't a selective judgment. 'Every living thing' – every creature, every 'soul of life' – that inhabited the sea is destroyed. This speaks to the totality of the ruin brought by sin and, consequently, by divine judgment.
Creation Groans
Paul speaks of creation groaning in its bondage to corruption (Romans 8:22). Here, creation itself, specifically the sea, becomes an instrument of judgment, suffering and reflecting the death that sin has brought into the world.
Divine Justice and Order
While terrifying, these judgments are also described as righteous and just. The sea, which can represent the chaotic and restless masses of humanity, is rendered utterly lifeless, a stark consequence of the widespread rebellion against God.
