The angels aren't acting on their own initiative but are commissioned ministers of God's justice, ready to execute His will as they are told.
Then I heard a loud voice from the temple telling the seven angels, “Go and pour out on the earth the seven bowls of the wrath of God.” So the first angel went and poured out his bowl on the earth, and harmful and painful sores came upon the people who bore the mark of the beast and worshiped its image.
English Standard Version (ESV)
After a cosmic preview of God's ultimate victory and judgment, John hears a direct command from God's presence in the heavenly temple. Seven angels, who were prepared in the previous chapter, are now commissioned to unleash the final outpouring of God's wrath upon the earth. This marks the beginning of the series of severe plagues that will bring about the destruction of the wicked and the full establishment of God's kingdom.
Who gives the command for such devastating judgment? It's not a rogue force, but a divine decree from the heart of God's dwelling place.
This verse opens with a 'great voice out of the temple' issuing a command to the seven angels. This isn't just any voice; the temple is God's holy dwelling, and the voice is understood by commentators like Ellicott and Clarke to be God's own voice. This highlights a crucial theological point: God is the ultimate authority behind all judgment. Even when severe consequences are unleashed, they originate from His divine will and permission. As Clarke notes, nothing happens without God's express command. This underlines His sovereignty, even in destruction.
The trumpets brought warnings; these vials bring finality. What's the difference in how God's justice unfolds here?
Commentators like Bengel and Wesley draw a clear distinction between the seven trumpets and these seven vials. The trumpets are described as gradually shaking the world kingdoms over a longer period, acting as more drawn-out warnings. In contrast, the vials represent a swift, sharp, and impetuous force specifically targeting the 'beast' and his followers. This signifies a final, decisive outpouring of God's judgment, distinct from the more gradual pronouncements that preceded it. It’s the culmination, the final act before the full establishment of God's kingdom.
