This verse highlights a beautiful unity between the Old and New Covenants by presenting a "song of Moses" alongside the "song of the Lamb." It reveals that God's deliverance of His people, whether from literal Egypt or from spiritual bondage, is fundamentally the same work, celebrated by the same redeemed people across all ages.
And they sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, “Great and amazing are your deeds, O Lord God the Almighty! Just and true are your ways, O King of the nations! Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship you, for your righteous acts have been revealed.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
In this section, John witnesses a triumphant assembly standing by a sea of glass, having overcome immense spiritual opposition. They are singing a powerful song of deliverance that echoes both the ancient praise of Moses after the Exodus and the praise of Christ, the Lamb, who has secured their victory. This song declares God's marvelous deeds and righteous ways as He brings final judgment upon His enemies and establishes His reign.
Imagine standing on the shore, watching your greatest enemy disappear beneath the waves. What song would you sing? This verse links a triumphant praise to a pivotal moment in ancient Israel's history.
The people gathered in Revelation are singing the 'song of Moses.' This immediately brings to mind the incredible deliverance of the Israelites from Pharaoh's army at the Red Sea, as recorded in Exodus 15. Moses composed a powerful song of praise to God for this miraculous rescue.
This connection is vital because it frames the redeemed's current victory. Just as God's people were rescued from physical bondage by His mighty hand, these saints are celebrating their spiritual liberation from oppressive forces through the power of the Lamb. The song isn't just a memory; it's a testament to God's unchanging character and His consistent action of saving His people from overwhelming enemies.
While the song echoes ancient deliverance, it also rings with a new, profound melody. What makes this song uniquely 'the Lamb's'?
The verse doesn't just mention the song of Moses; it also highlights 'the song of the Lamb.' This is crucial because it signifies that while the theme of God's deliverance is constant, the source and means of redemption have reached their ultimate expression in Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.
The song of Moses celebrated God's power in saving Israel from physical slavery. The song of the Lamb celebrates God's power in saving humanity from spiritual bondage to sin and death through Christ's sacrifice and resurrection. This new song is sung by those redeemed by His blood, recognizing Him as the ultimate victor over evil.

In the midst of awe-inspiring power, the song zeroes in on specific attributes of God. Why are 'justice' and 'truth' so central to this heavenly praise?
The praise offered is not just for God's power ('Great and amazing are your deeds'), but specifically for His character: 'Just and true are your ways.' This highlights that God's actions are not arbitrary or capricious; they are rooted in perfect righteousness and unwavering faithfulness.
In the context of Revelation, where judgment is falling upon wicked systems and people, the emphasis on justice and truth is paramount. It assures believers that God's actions are perfectly fair and that His promises – both of judgment on evil and salvation for His people – are certain to be fulfilled. This isn't just abstract theology; it's a declaration of confidence in God's moral order and His ultimate triumph of righteousness.
