Revelation 11:3-6

What does Revelation 11:3-6 mean?

It’s easy to focus on who the two witnesses might be, but the verse emphasizes God’s direct empowerment and the nature of their work. They don't just predict the future; their "prophesying" is a powerful declaration of God's truth, done for a specific, extended period, and marked by a humble, mourning attire that speaks volumes against the world's excess.

And I will grant authority to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth.” These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth. And if anyone would harm them, fire pours from their mouth and consumes their foes. If anyone would harm them, this is how he is doomed to be killed. They have the power to shut the sky, that no rain may fall during the days of their prophesying, and they have power over the waters to turn them into blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague, as often as they desire.

What Revelation 11:3-6 means

This passage describes God empowering two specific witnesses who will faithfully "prophesy"—preach and bear testimony—for a symbolic 1,260 days, enduring hardship and mourning indicated by their sackcloth clothing. This ministry occurs during a period when the outer court of God's temple is being measured for judgment, highlighting that even amidst spiritual oppression, God preserves and empowers His faithful messengers. Their prophetic witness, though clothed in sorrow, stands in stark contrast to the surrounding corruption and serves as a testament to divine truth during a challenging era.

Divine Authority for Witnessing

Who gives these witnesses their power? It's not just about being bold; it's about divine appointment.

The verse begins with 'And I will grant authority to my two witnesses.' This isn't a self-appointed mission. God Himself is the one who bestows the authority and power for their prophetic work. This highlights that true spiritual impact comes from God, not human effort alone.

This divine empowerment is crucial because the work they are called to do is challenging and often met with opposition. They are equipped by God to fulfill their specific role during a defined period.

The Nature of Prophetic Work

What does it truly mean to 'prophesy' in the context of Revelation?

The word 'prophesy' here isn't just about predicting the future. While future events can be part of it, the core meaning is 'to speak forth' God's message. These witnesses will be proclaiming God's truth, denouncing sin and corruption, and calling people to repentance.

Their 'prophesying' is a vital, ongoing testimony, even when that message is unwelcome. It's about faithfully declaring God's will and judgments, a role that often leads to suffering.
